Situated in the upper right abdomen, just below the liver, the gallbladder serves as a reservoir for bile, a digestive juice with a green-yellow hue. The most prevalent issue affecting the gallbladder is the formation of gallstones.

Causes of Gallstones

Gallstones are known to contain cholesterol, but they can also contain calcium salts and bilirubin in certain cases. There are theories that claim yellow gallstones are caused by too much cholesterol in the bile.

If there is an excess of bilirubin in the bile, dark brown or black colored stones will form. Concentrated bile can cause gallstones to form if the gallbladder is unable to empty the bile properly. Gallstones can occur at almost any age, but they are more common in overweight women over forty.

Symptoms of Gallbladder Stones

Symptoms of gallbladder issues include:

  1. Pain in the upper right side of the abdomen
  2. Occasional pain and bloating triggered by the consumption of fat-rich foods
  3. Burping, nausea, and vomiting
  4. Stomach ache and diarrhea

These symptoms collectively are termed biliary colic.

Additionally, individuals may have asymptomatic gallstones or silent gallstones, meaning they experience no pain or noticeable symptoms. Such stones are typically identified during an abdominal x-ray or ultrasound.

Gallbladder Treatment / Removal Methods

  1. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy or Keyhole Gallbladder Stone Removal: To access surgical instruments in this procedure, the surgeon creates several small incisions in the skin. Through one of these incisions, the surgeon removes the gallbladder stone.
  2. Open Surgery: In an open gallbladder procedure, doctors make a large abdominal incision to gain access to the gallbladder.

Generally, a few minor abdominal incisions are made in order for the surgeon to place a thin surgical instrument into your abdominal cavity during the removal of gallbladder stones. A tube that releases a moderate stream of carbon dioxide gas is inserted into the incision. By doing this, the abdominal walls and the underlying organ are separated. Once the gallbladder is detached, the surgeon views it on a monitor using the small camera attached to the laparoscope.

To check for gallstones lodged in the bile ducts, specialized x-rays known as cholangiograms are performed during the procedure. The arteries and ducts of the gallbladder are then amputated permanently. Next, the gallbladder is removed, or the stones are removed if that is all that can be done.
